This week’s columns bring news (Busiek on VOA in the Trump era), human interest stories, sports news, a metro restaurant review, a bunch of political commentary - of course - walks in the woods, and two different views of fire.

In 2023, The Trevor Project’s U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People found that “fewer than 40% of LGBTQ young people found their home to be LGBTQ-affirming,” and “41% of LGBTQ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.

By linking readers to writers—directly, we believe we are providing a service that is becoming more valuable as legacy media shrinks. There is a growing interest in trusted commentary and old-fashioned column writing.
JOHN NAUGHTON
“Nick knows what he’s walking into,” Born said. “He’s been in Toronto for 10 years, he had the pressure of an entire country on him.”
WINI MORANVILLE
“We only use fresh ingredients in our kitchen. All sauces, dressings, desserts are made here in house by our team. Our staff does all of our prep daily to ensure freshness. We use locally sourced ingredients as much as we possibly can.”

The Woodbury County Courthouse is the largest publicly owned Prairie School building in the world. Even its original furniture was designed in the Prairie School tradition
DAVE BUSIEK
Senators Grassley and Ernst – Grassley in particular – like to champion themselves as strong defenders of the First Amendment, yet where were they when the guy they voted to confirm was tearing apart this important government agency? Where were their investigations? Where were their news releases? Not one tweet about this attack on journalistic independence?
TERESA ZILK
“I’m a Violence Interrupter.”
LAURA BELIN
Notes taken by Trump's former attorney indicated that his client floated the idea of ignoring the subpoena or lying about whether documents remained at Mar-a-Lago:
"Wouldn’t it be better if we just told them we don’t have anything here?"
ART CULLEN
Harold Hughes broke through in 1962 under somewhat similar circumstances with a campaign built around liquor by the drink. Hughes had a fire in his belly. Does Sand?

They talked of rare and elusive spadefoot toads and prairie rattlesnakes. Whip-poor-wills serenaded the campers all night long. Coyotes and barred owls joined the chorus.

In the incredibly homogenous world of gaming, Kvalo wants to disrupt the narrative that gaming is for only a select group of people. His company will provide the opportunity for indie developers to get their ideas out into the world, and for different people to be able to see themselves when they turn on a console.
On June 9 and 10, Iowa Writers’ Collaborative members gathered to talk about improving our columns and growing our readership base. Bob Leonard spoke to us about the importance of getting to the ‘why’ of our columns.
So, here’s a snippet about why we do what we do. First, we think it is important from a community-building standpoint to tell you about such things as local moms giving hugs to kids struggling with their identity, or a woman dedicated to decreasing violence in her community, or the beautiful lands from our Loess Hills, and what is going on politically in the state.
The writers listed below dedicate time, sweat, tears, and human capital to bring these stories to you.
Please consider supporting their work in any way you can. Of course, a paid subscription makes a writer feel valued. None of us will get rich doing this work, but we see these columns as purposeful.
Do you agree? What can YOU do to help spread the word?
