This podcast was recorded yesterday and uploaded last night on the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative production of Iowa Down Ballot. It is our third episode, and it’s a fascinating exchange with thoughtful observers who have a perspective on the presidential race as political analysts.
A discussion about a judicial retention question might change your mind about the issue, thanks to this exchange among our panel. Also, learn about Kamala Harris and Tim Walz from those who have covered him in Iowa in the past.
We have rotating moderators and panelist. In this episode, the discussion is lead by Kathie Obradovich, of Iowa Capital Dispatch. This digital, hard-hitting, investigative journalism platform is part of the States Newsroom project, and includes a national network of local news and information websites. It’s a must-read.
Here is a list of our panelists. Link to each of them to be taken to their Substack column:

Okoboji Writers’ and Songwriters’ Retreat
How it works. Volunteers host a hotdog roast on Sunday, September 22, at Lakeside Labs, the main venue where the Okoboji Writers’ and Songwriters Retreat will be held.
Here is an outline of the first day of the Okoboji Writers’ and Songwriters’ Retreat:
We gather in a big tent early Monday morning, September 23, and the speakers each have one minute introductions to say what they are doing that day.
Next, we break into panels (memoir, fiction, nonfiction, a masterclass in reporting, starting your own newspaper, poetry, songwriting, the business of being a musician, script writing for film and television, documentary film making, starting a Substack column, and more!).
From there, we offer workshops in small group settings scattered throughout two campuses, Lakeside Labs and the Lakeshore Center next door.
We have volunteers signed up to operate golf carts and shuttle service for those who need assistance.
Monday night, we will show a documentary film produced by Nik Heftman, a former CBS news producer who met Spoken Word artists, Caleb Rainey, at the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat. Both were (and are) speakers. Anyone who hears Caleb knows he has special talents, and Nik decided to tell his story through film. I can’t wait to see it!
An optional pasta dinner follows the premier of the film, and then our songwriters take the stage of the Pearson Lakes Art Center for a concert. Holy cow! This will be magical! Stay tuned for details, and follow
for more information. We repeat the schedule with some workshop title changes on Tuesday and Wednesday, ending at noon on September 25.
