More Big News for the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative
Hey, readers, we’re bringing a new writer to our collaborative: Larry Stone. This conservationist/journalist covered Iowa’s parks, rivers, streams, fishing and hunting, through an ‘outdoors living’ column he produced for The Des Moines Register. After decades covering this beat, his bosses wanted him to move from his idyllic land in the northeast corner of the state, to Des Moines. As a result, he quit, and has been a prolific author and lecturer ever since.
Julie Gammack writes about Stone, and introduces his first column, Listening to the Land:
Due to the newsworthy nature of the interview and the issues Chris Jones raised in his interview with Robert Leonard last week, Gammack will have both of them on her Monday Zoom call at noon, tomorrow, May 8. She is opening the show to all subscribers of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative. Here is the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81477520889
CHERYL TEVIS
Serendipitously, Cheryl Tevis, writes about the issue of water quality, too, this week, and reports on a panel discussion held at Plymouth Congregational Church last Sunday on this very topic. Her kicker:
Doesn't this smell to the high Heaven?!
DAVE BUSIEK
Read Busiek’s column for a shocking, local story about Sinclair Broadcasting. And much more.
DOUG BURNS
Doug Burns introduces his readers to a rising Democratic star, whose unusual life story, and teeny tiny vote win, says he’s a politician to follow. Burns calls the Gold Medal Paralympic athlete, Josh Turek, for a ‘recapturing of the the sizzle of his steak fry fall days…’
ED TIBBETTS
ART CULLEN
You can’t just pull the plug on ethanol and corn markets. It would be an economic disaster. But neither should we delude ourselves into thinking that we can pin our prosperity around corn ethanol burned by the ground transportation fleet. Our biofuel infrastructure needs help on transitioning to its next phase, not spending all our political capital defending the old structure.
LAURA BELIN
JANE NGUYEN
KURT MEYER
The Iowa Democratic Party chair, Rita Hart is showing up around the state, and since that’s the title of Kurt’s column, he’s writing about her visit to rural Iowa.
MACEY SPENSLEY
The youngest member of our Iowa Writers’ Collaborative (so far) has a fresh perspective on lots of things, and it’s fun to tag along on her journey of discovery. Do you know what the word ‘liminality’ means? Find out:
SUZANNA DE BACA
...The earth has come loose. There is nothing
to hold it down. It is rootless, displaced,
adrift on a sea of highway. The ghosts
are awakened by a bitter wind unleashed
from the fields; they descend
with a sudden darkness....
