Laura Belin follows the Iowa Legislature as best as anyone can. And, the state’s executive branch. And more. Elections have consequences, and the last few have wrought changes making the state unrecognizable. Catch up to what’s happening in Belin’s columns.

Iowa’s legendary folksinger appeared in two of our columnist’s offerings this week. Check out Kyle Munson and Art Cullen, to catch up on the Iowa Waltz composer’s views.

Bob Leonard and Dave Busiek touch on the decline of legacy newspapers. The Iowa Writers’ Collaborative gets a shout-out in a new book on the subject Leonard reviews.

As for legendary, our sports and culture columnist, John Naughton, tells about a rising star from Waukee, a leader on and off the basketball court.

Issues such as book banning (Cheryl Tevis), guns (Mary Sander’s Emerging Voices) and mental health issues facing youth (Doug Burns). Burns also writes about Governor Kim Reynolds this week.

Our columnists get personal, too. Check out Macey Spensley, Jane Nguyen, Kurt Meyer, Teresa Silk, and Suzanna de Baca as they give us insights into their observations from personal experience.

Julie Gammack is turning her Monday Zoom lunch calls into a talk show format and she’s opening the sessions to all subscribers. Check out her upcoming guests.

Reporting and feature stories help us all understand our community and state. Hola Iowa and Pat Kinney’s columns do just that this week.

Barry Piatt opines about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the ‘wobbly’ mixed messages from the GOP.

We hope you enjoy this Sunday’s Roundup. Please tell your friends. That’s how we are growing each week. One subscriber at a time, day in and day out, readers are finding us because of you.

We are linking readers to writers of Iowa commentary, and this experiment is proving there is a real and growing interest. Thanks for sharing this with those you think will find it valuable.

Kyle Munson's Main Street
Side streets: A folksinger, a podcast, a photographer, and a backlog of books
I named this newsletter “Kyle Munson’s Main Street” because—well, in the first place because my wife thought of a name that was catchier and more on point than anything I had brainstormed. I wanted the name to nod to one of my core beliefs about news media: It functions best as a voice for real-world communities where neighbors, although they may seriou…

ART CULLEN

Art Cullen’s Notebook
The last waltz
Greg Brown, left, with Byron Stuart at the legendary Byron’s Bar in Pomeroy, Iowa, after a show. Iowa’s leading muse, Greg Brown, put on his last big show at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City last weekend. He insists he is retired, done with the road, off the stage unless some local benefit draws in him. He’s 73. He would just as soon stay home and write …

Deep Midwest: Politics and Culture
The Shredding of Midwestern Newspapers
My friend Jon K. Lauck has just released a sobering, data-rich assessment of the current state of newspapers in the Midwest that has been published in the most recent issue of the Middle West Review, where he is Editor in Chief. Jon grew up in South Dakota and earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa and his law degree from the University …

Caleb "The Negro Artist" Rainey
Caleb Rainey is brilliant. Let’s start with that. Don’t just listen to me; see for yourself. Below is a video of him performing his work, “To the Girl Who Wants to be a Poem.” Caleb is a master storyteller, writer, and performance artist. He’s a kind, thoughtful, warm, and generous man who can also be angry when we all probably should be. I met Caleb last year at…

Newspapers Making Money; Another Journalist Killed; Advice for Don Lemon
Several topics of note in this week’s On Media column. The owner of The Des Moines Register, Gannett, announced this week that it made a profit in the last quarter of 2022. There’s good news and bad news in that. It’s an encouraging turnaround for the company, the largest newspaper chain in the country. Gannett reported net income in the fourth quarter …

My Life, in Color
Waukee's Omaha Biliew: A big star, and an even bigger heart
Basketball star Omaha Biliew has the skills of a future NBA player. He’s headed toward the McDonald’s All American Game, followed by a career at Iowa State and is an almost certain choice to be Iowa’s Mr. Basketball. He’s regarded as one of the nation’s top players, with lofty averages of 22 points and 10 rebounds a game. Waukee has a 21-2 record and needs one win to reach the state tournament March 6-10 at Wells Fargo Arena…

Iowa politics with Laura Belin
GOP presidential hopefuls and lots of Iowa legislative news
Before I get to this week’s show, I wanted to mention that supporters are organizing some house parties for me around the state this spring to help support my work at Bleeding Heartland. We have tentative dates for events in Newton, Pella, Des Moines, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City, and are planning some get-togethers in other locations as well…

Mary Swander's Emerging Voices
Losing my Sister in a Mass Shooting
Rhonda’s bedroom was small. She did not have much stuff but I knew we had to triage: dispose of, give to goodwill, or keep. Dad opened the three white garbage bags so it was easy to sort. Suddenly I heard this guttural noise behind my back and turned to see Dad staring into the large white garbage bag he held between his hands…

The Classic Question: What do you want to be when you grow up?
As an elementary student in the 80s, I was fascinated by my teachers. I would carefully study their every move in the classroom. They always appeared to be in control, and very rarely did I see a teacher become flustered. Teachers were the ones in charge, and I liked that about them…

Along the Mississippi
Who will stand up for democracy?
Since the days of Ronald Reagan, we’ve been told Democrats are weak, that they aren’t willing to stand up to dictators. It’s as much the gospel of the Republican Party as tax cuts. But now Republicans face a major national security choice. Who will they pick in 2024 to stand up to the greatest threat to democracy since …

‘Everything goes my way’ – the wonderful political life of Kim Reynolds
Actor Michael Urie’s character, Brian, the gay best friend of lead Jason Segel in the Apple TV hit “Shrinking,” has a catch phrase that’s caught me in a days-long pondering of Gov. Kim Reynolds, her remarkable ascendency and defining of Iowa, a mark-making perhaps more permanent than anything shepherded by any Hawkeye State leader in history, in her vis…

The Midwest Creative
Connecting Creativity and Culture in Des Moines
I think a main feature of being young is to receive constant lectures about what it means to be young and how you should behave. Some of it I’ve encountered just seems like unnecessary noise from people who are bitter they didn’t live their young lives like they feel like they’re owed (sorry guys). But if you’re able to dig past the regrets and longing…

Unfinished Business
Unfinished Business
As a kid growing up on the farm, my mom always knew where to find me: "You were sitting in a corner, with your nose stuck in a book," she would say. Mom encouraged reading, but like many kids, I tended to avoid my household chores. When I was in fourth grade, a teacher called me out for reading a book instead of working on…

Julie Gammack's Iowa Potluck
First time caller?
As this column’s Monday Zoom lunch session has become a popular feature, it reminds me of my stint in the mid-1980s when I was a talk show host on the venerable 50,000-watt station, WHO. Our accumulated audience dominated the airwaves throughout the state. It was a heady time, and although I was never quite as outrageous as my predecessor, Susan Bray, …

Michael Magee is a retired Waterloo city sanitation worker. So he knows a lot about salvaging treasure from, well, the rest. He’s also been an unofficial city historian for more than 35 years. Books That Shaped Me
In celebration of Black History Month, I am sharing a list of books by Black authors and writers that have impacted me over the years. Some I read as a young teen like, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. I never knew it was a banned book until I became an adult. However, it was was pivotal in my development as a young Black woman. Most re…

Republican Bloc Says It Is For Freedom
Last Friday (2/24/23) marked the one year anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s deadly and unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine. Two things are now clear: Russia is not the great military war machine it claimed to be. Putin thought his war in Ukraine was going to be a proverbial 15 minute war. Go in. Win easy. Come home. Let the parades begin…
